European birthwort (Osterluzei) - Aristolochia clematitis.
Garlands of original “jug” flowers!
Name: comes from the Greek “aristos” - best and “lochein” - birth. In ancient times, the plant was considered the patron of birth.
It grows naturally in the eastern states of North America.
Liana for a semi-shaded garden. A long-rhizomatous perennial herbaceous plant, similar to a low liana from the Aristolochiaceae family, 90-130 cm high.
The stem is unbranched, erect or slightly sinuous. The leaves are ovate or rounded-heart-shaped, alternate, finely toothed at the edges, with petioles, matte green, up to 10 cm long.
Blooms in May-June. The flowers are unusually pitcher-shaped, yellow, and sit in bunches of 5-8 pieces in the axils of the leaves on a peduncle 10-12 mm long.
The fruit is a hanging, fleshy, green, pear-shaped or round capsule up to 5-6 cm in size when unripe, opening when ripe.
The plant is considered very promising for vertical gardening of semi-shaded areas with loose, well-drained alkaline or neutral soils, but does not tolerate stagnant moisture (drought-resistant). It is better to plant Aristolochia in shady places.
It is advisable to sow seeds in open ground late in the fall. 1,0 g = 20 seeds.
In the spring, friendly shoots appear, as they grow, they are picked and grown (when sowing in spring, stratification is required at a temperature of +5+8 °C).
It is used to decorate low buildings, tree trunks, and grows well among bushes.
Attention! The plant is poisonous.
